Morocco with a long-standing history has its rich heritage preserved in the breathtaking architecture seen everywhere in the high-walled medinas, minarets, monumental gates, ksar and kasbahs.
The biggest attraction of Morocco is the vibrant city of Marrakech, nicknamed the Red City or Ochre City, near the foot of the Atlas Mountains, where walking around the labyrinth of narrow winding alleys and streets lined with stalls and souks is a journey of senses. In a contrast with the old medina, there are modern districts with grand boulevards and European-style buildings in ochre color.
But Morocco is much more than Marrakech. In the North is the whitewashed Tangier, with its sandy beaches; Tetouan known as the “White dove” and Chefchaouen which is a picturesque city all coloured and nestled between two mountains. Further down the Atlantic coast is the capital city Rabat, cosmopolitan Casablanca and the beach resort of Agadir and its wonderful bay, popular among sun-seekers.
Heading inland are the Imperial cities of Fez, the spiritual capital with medieval medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Meknes with ancient walled medinas and beautiful gates, also a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Continuing southward, you explore this intriguing country further, heading to the verdant valleys, deep gorges, snow-topped peaks and traditional Berber villages of the magnificent Atlas Mountain range and the vastness of the Sahara Desert. Discover the typical architecture of the ksars and kasbahs and fortified villages erected near oases and in the East explore Merzouga which opens to the desert.
Moroccan cuisine has a variety of flavours as combination of Berber, Arab-Andalusian, and Jewish traditions. Couscous, Tajine, Pastilla, Mrouzia, and R’fissa, are some of the famous dishes that you should try.
With varied geography, the best time to visit Morocco depends on where you want to go. To visit the main attractions such as Marrakech and Fez, Spring (April to June) and Autumn (September to November) are the best. For the Sahara Desert, early Spring or Autumn are ideal but there can be some sandstorms coming from the South during March and April. The best time to enjoy the beaches of Essaouira and Agadir is summer months but it’s also the peak season so book early.
